Local 330 is collaborating with the Ottawa Valley Food Co-operative Inc. and the OFA in Renfrew County to put on an Agri-food Career Fair this summer. We are looking for 2 or 3 charismatic people that could help inspire youth by being keynote speakers at this event. We have a budget to cover travel costs and an honourium.
The demand for locally grown or manufactured food is much greater than the capacity to meet the demand. Similarly, the demand for high quality and nutritious food made from environmentally sustainable farming systems is also growing faster than the supply. However, in rural Renfrew County, we are unable to capitalize on these trends because we already struggle to attract and retain youth to work in farming since many talented young people leave rural communities to seek careers in urban centres.
One of our sector’s greatest challenges is to renew and diversify the aging labour force of the farm community. Local 330 is helping to organize an Agri-food Career Fair to encourage young people to consider choosing agriculture & agri-food as a career path.
In early July, 2022, we are planning to take about 20 people under 30 years of age on an agri-food tour over about 2.5 days to visit farms / food-makers where they can receive some inspiring demonstrations of the agri-food world in action. Combined with that, we hope to have keynote speakers that can provide vision and motivation for choosing an agri-food career.
If you have suggestions for speakers or want to get involved, contact Marshall Buchanan, President Local 330 by phone at (613) 602-5253 or by email at [email protected]
