We all want a sustainable food system that can support all of us. Even if you’re not growing food, your voice is important to Ontario’s agri-food sector and your support is invaluable. We believe a sustainable food and agriculture sector means farms need to be economically, social, and environmentally sustainable. Healthy farmland has an incredible capacity to enhance the local environment and make a difference across our communities. But sustainability also means that farmers farming for the benefit of the environment and local economy need to make a living, and that rural communities give them the social support they need to live happily and healthily. Your support helps us to make what should already be a reality.
Healthy, local food matters to you, and it matters to us too. While our farmer members have the supply side down, many of our foodie members are championing the demand side of the equation. Our organization takes on projects that help to support you in your advocacy for local, sustainable food. We connect with allies in education, health care, and urban communities so that they know they have the support of local farmers as they champion more local food in their daily lives.
While many of our farmer and non-farming members join to support the many important initiatives we take on to support the local food system, we also help to build strong movements outside of Canada. The NFU is a founding member of La Via Campesina, an international movement of small farmers which now represents and works to support the interests of 200 million farmers around the world. Think local, act global. Think global, act local. If there’s one thing you can count on, the NFU-O is an organization that acts. And we act for good.
Like what you hear and want to join us? Great! As a Non-Farming Member, you’ll be invited to attend meetings, events, our convention, and connect with farmers and other members like you!
