Our Local Typically Has...
Welcome message from the President:
Whether you are a farmer or an eater, I welcome you to help us strengthen the farm community in the Dufferin/Simcoe region. You can contact me directly, speak to other NFU members in your area, or attend a meeting and/or event. We would love to hear from you. Geographically we are a large local but strive to include members from all areas of the region. We also strive to connect and collaborate with our neighbouring locals. Our local is made up of diverse landscapes, rural, urban and sub-urban communities that are serviced by new, and well seasoned farmers who can share a breadth of knowledge and experience with renewed enthusiasm to keep local food in our local economy. This diversity inspires us to go beyond sustainability and work towards regenerative farms, communities and landscapes.
About Our Local
We are a group of dedicated people who care deeply about the future of regenerative farming. By promoting local food, as well as farmers who use ecological practices, we create a safe and sustainable food system. Community is important to us. Strong communities create strong voices for change. Together, we can make change by advocating for stronger policies that protect local farms and food, and tackle the many challenges farmers face. Our mission is to develop and enhance awareness of regenerative agriculture by advocating for, and inspiring sustainable agricultural practices.
Why You Should Join Us
If you are a farmer belonging to another farm organization, you do have a choice. At the NFU-O, there is always a place for diverse voices, ideas and actions. If you’re looking strong communities, sound policies and sustainable farms in agriculture, the NFU has a place for you. Our local is a great grassroots farm organization, where farmers and eaters come together to discuss concerns, solve issues, network and form friendships.
Not A Farmer?
Our associate members play an important role in our local. Their thoughts, energy and consistent presence are an asset to the organization. By connecting with farmers in their region they become acquainted with the difficulties and concerns of our farmers. Non-farm members also express their concerns about access to local, real and healthy food. It is a great way to support local farmers. Joining our Local makes you part of the solutions on issues such as GMOs, global warming, global corporations and other such obstacles threatening our farmers. Your input and support are important because it takes all of us, farmers and eaters, to create the changes we need.
Our typical meeting usually lasts 1.5-2 hours and is attended by 6-8 individuals including board members, associate members and guests. It gives us the opportunity to discuss issues on the agenda that are sent out prior to the meeting. It’s wonderful to share our input and come up with solutions to the issues. Everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and have their concerns voiced. We meet via teleconferencing, and try to occasionally meet in person.
Upcoming 2020 Local 347 AGM
We are looking for some input on what our members would like to see for this years AGM so that it is reflective of our local including:
- What topic/speaker would you like to have at our AGM?
- At what location should the AGM be at?
- What date would you like to have the AGM?
- Would you prefer to have it in the evening/daytime and weekday/Saturday?
So far our board is looking at the beginning of February on a mid week day held closer to Dufferin County since the last AGM was in Simcoe County.
Please email your suggestions to Cindy at email@example.com.
The main event we have is our local AGM once a year. We also attend several other events throughout the year to encourage other farmers and eaters to become members of the NFU-O and spread the word about the great work we do. We host, attend and collaborate on events throughout the year such as Farmers Markets, the Dufferin Farm Tour, Member Farm Tours and Local Food Events.
