The issues that matter to NFU-O members.
The NFU-O is proud to be the voice advocating on behalf of small and medium-sized farms on issues, legislation, and regulations covered by municipal, provincial, and federal governments.
Soil & Water Health
NFU-O Position: Publicly funded programs and resources are needed to advance soil and water-related research and incentivize soil enhancement and protection.
Land Access
NFU-O Position: Formal land-linking programs are needed to address the systematic transfer of Ontario’s farmland into the hands of new, young and diverse farmers. Widespread policy changes like anti-farmland grabbing legislation are necessary to ensure there is farmland left to transfer.
Farm Labour
NFU-O Position: Government support is needed to ensure both farmers and farm workers are able to earn livable incomes, with particular considerations on racial equity, farmworker rights and the unique conditions of small to mid-size farms.
Food Sovereignty
NFU-O Position: To achieve and sustain food sovereignty, it is essential to ensure food and land policies are centred around the knowledge, expertise, and needs of farmers, Indigenous peoples, and their local communities.
Farmland Protection
NFU-O Position: Farmland is a precious resource and is fundamental to food sovereignty and healthy communities. Protecting against farmland-grabbing is of utmost importance to safeguard our food security, preserve agricultural heritage, and promote sustainable land use for future generations.
Climate Change & Biodiversity
NFU-O Position: Farmers are disproportionately affected by the changing climate, but are also in a unique position to shift agricultural practices and push for policies that can make a significant impact for the environment.
