Farm Property Class Tax Rate Program

There is a new, simplified online application process to apply or remain eligible for a reduced property tax rate on your farmland.

Farmland owners who would like to benefit from the reduced property tax rate are required to submit an eligibility application if they:

  • Recently purchased farmland
  • Need an exemption to eligibility criteria for the program
  • Made changes to their farmland ownership, such as:
    • Amending property rental agreements or land usage
    • Updating farm business structures
    • Transferring property ownership to a family member
    • Adding or removing a spouse after a marriage or separation
    • Ownership becoming part of an estate.

Program and eligibility requirements remain the same

Eligible farmland is taxed at no more than 25% of the municipality's residential property tax rate. This reduced property tax rate can make a significant difference. Applying as soon as possible can help farmland owners get the most out of the program.

 

As always, farmland owners only need to apply once. After that, their farm property remains eligible for the farm property class tax rate as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements, such as keeping their Farm Business Registration number current every year. Previously-approved farmland owners do not need to reapply unless there is a change to property ownership or an expired exemption, as listed above.
