NFU-O Celebrates Protection of Central Experimental Farm

(Guelph, ON) The National Farmers Union – Ontario (NFU-O) congratulates the National Capital Commission (NCC) on its guidance of an open and democratic site selection process for the new Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital to a successful conclusion with the recommendation of Tunney’s Pasture federal lands.

Grassroots members of the NFU-O challenged the NCC’s suggestion to develop one of our national experimental farms. Removing the threat of development from the Central Experimental Farm protects crop and livestock research that will help pull us through droughts like the one recently experienced across Ontario as well as address issues related to climate change.
“If we couldn’t protect the Central Experimental Farm’s agricultural research land, how could we protect any of our Canadian farms where our food production happens?” noted Emery Huszka, NFU-O President. “This is a great result and a win for eaters and farmers in our democracy!”
When given the opportunity, citizens of the nation’s capital spoke up forcefully for preserving agricultural research lands, heritage, and greenspace while advocating for progress in planning Ottawa’s future infrastructure around sustainable public transportation. Locating the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital at Tunney’s Pasture will have many advantages for all of Ottawa’s citizens as well as for the future of farming.
