LOANS NOT THE ANSWER - ACTION NEEDED ON MARKET POWER

The Federal Minister of Agriculture’s announcement of a cash advance repayment extension for hog and cattle farmers is welcomed but does not address the fundamental market problems faced by farmers.  Action is needed by the Canadian government to ensure farmers receive a fair price for their animals”, said Dave Lewington, 1st Vice President, National Farmers Union.

More than 500 citizens of all ages and political stripes peacefully blocked cattle trucks from entering the Frontenac Institution in Kingston today in an act of peaceful civil disobedience. Members of the Save Our Prison Farms campaign—which has been fighting the closure of Canada’s prison farms for more than a year-and-a-half—blockaded the institution today and refused to move despite nine arrests by City of Kingston Police and a prolonged rainstorm.

Despite 18 months of strong public opposition from Canadians of all backgrounds and political stripes, the Conservative government will try to end the prison farms by shipping out the Frontenac Institution dairy herd this weekend.  The Save Our Prison Farms national campaign is calling on citizens to stop them.

CBC's Ideas will be broadcasting a series on factory farming called Have Your Meat and Eat it Too by journalist Jill Eisen.

Program 1 is about factory farming and its problems. Program 2 explores the arguments for and against eating meat. Program 3 looks at alternative ways of raising livestock and consuming meat.
